Hello,
Yesterday as I was driving down the interstate I spotted an
interesting car by the side of the road, and stopped to take a
look. Even from far away it looked European, probably early
50's. I really would like to find out what it is, here is what I
know:
aluminum 2 door convertible body on wood frame (Touring
superleggera?), 2 filler caps, one on each rear fender,
6 cylinder DOHC engine with 2 sidedraft carbs, manual trans,
Smiths instruments, 5 lug 16" wheels, inboard rear drum brakes on
either independent or DeDion rear suspension. On the oval brake
pedal it says "Lagonda".
AFAIK Lagonda is a british car company, that was bought by Aston
Martin. Any more info on this car would be appreciated.
BTW, the car needed a total resto, the guy whose property it was
on said that the city was going to bulldoze his neighbor's house,
and he was not going to leave this car in the garage, so he drag
it onto his property. He thought it was a 1955 Daimler, but I
think he is wrong.
bye,
Csaba

Csaba .. Lagonda was purchased in about 1947 by Bavid Brown the
then owner of Aston Martin . The "DB" in AM model designations
stands for his name. My limited information says that the last
Aston Martin/Lagondas were race cars produced in 1954 as V12's
Lagonda had a v12 just before WWII but may not have produced any
cars after 1940.The vehicle you saw with the 6 cyl engine and De
dion rear suspension probably was one that AM built. I suspect
they just continued building the car after buying it and when
they quit racing quit using the name and probably stopped
building the car... By the way was it for sale and how much..??
Just curious

Jim,
Thanks for the info!
: By the way was it for sale and how much..??
I assume it is for sale, but would not know for how much. The
'owner' seemed to think it was something rare and valuable. But
as I said, he drag it out of a house's garage, so I'm sure he
does not have a title for it.
bye,
Csaba

I went to the Aston Martin Lagonda site and found that Lagonda
became sort of a custom A/M that are still available and
built to order.. They had a registery and pictures and I
suspect the if car you saw had clamshell fenders it was a
Series II with a 2.6 Liter engine designed by W.O.Bently before
the 2nd WW. Nowhere did it say anything about a wooden frame. The
Series II was produced from 47 to 53.. Cars later than that were
all RHD.. Not many Lagondas were imported to the US .... I also
checked out Daimler but my books are vague on it.. MG used wood
in their cars as did Morgan . Not sure about any one else .Car
mysteries are a lot more fun now that we have the net...

I would think that the "wooden frame" refered to the frame work
which the body panels were mounted over and not the "frame"in
which the engine and running gear are mounted. Wood frame work on
which body work is mounted is a common "old time" technique,
Morgan still uses it today.

Thanks for the detective work! Could you give an URL, please?
I"ll do a search, but may not find it...
:Nowhere did it say anything about a wooden frame.
I didnt mean that the frame itself was made of wood, just parts
of the body, to support the metal.

This was RHD, should have mentioned it.
Thanks,
Csaba
