Does anyone have an opinion on what the best carb would be to replace the
original 28/36 DHSA on a 1608? Thanks for any help!

Denise
That is a good carb. Keep it or replace with the same if it is broken or go
dual carbs for power upgrade.
The theory as I recall it is a small bore carburator is best for low end torque
and a big bore for horsepower and high revs. The small 28mm primary and bigger
secondary of yours trys do it all.

This is an excellent carb that combines economy and performance. You did not
say what you are looking for in the replacement. A carb with better
performance, such as the 34DMSA will result in only a slight performance
improvement while losing several mpg.

Thanks for the reply fellas. I'm asking for a friend of mine but I ran into
the same problem he's experiencing. After rebuilding the carb, it ran rich,
no matter how it was adjusted. Does anyone have a suggestion on who to send
it to for a rebuild? I hear certain parts are not available for it.

As others have noted, it's a nice carb and I have put several on TCs in place
of the later ADF. I even converted mine to mechanical secondary. Sounds like
something went back on wrong. I'm certainly willing to take a look at it.

Denise,

I'm running a 32/36DFV on my '71 with a 1608. I like it because it's slightly
larger, so has better flow at wide-open throttle and it has a mechanical
secondary instead of the vacuum one. The top is also the same shape so one can
use the stock air cleaner.

Here is some interesting reading: http://www.mirafiori.com/pbs/pbsdohc.html

I put a 34DMSA with a 1.8L intake manifold on my 1608, and was pleased. As
Pete said, there may have been an almost minimal drop in gas mileage, from
about 28-29 mpg to about 26-27 mpg, but I was also changing from a 1438cc to a
1608cc engine at the same time, so who's to say where the real difference was.

The one thing that I especially liked is the mechanical secondary, as opposed
to vacuum secondary on the DHSA carbs. I can say for sure that the car felt
more punch to it, and probably because the vacuum secondary never worked quite
right, and unless you have some kind of sensor to tell you that it is moving,
you never really know for sure that it is moving. If your friend sticks to the
DHSA, I would suggest that he try to modify the vacuum to a mechanical operated
secondary.
