In my 1800 block that I just got back from the machine shop I 
found this lump of......?  It sticks together like clay and is 
kind of blue gray in color.  I found it wedged between the #1 
cylinder jacket and the exhaust wall of the block.  I was looking 
in the waterpump hole.  I took a hooked probe and got all of it 
out I think.  Anyone ever seen something like this before?  I'm 
stumped.

sounds like the stuff I've seen advertised in Muscle car type 
catalogs.
some kind of block filler that helps relieve 
stress/resonances/etc from the block.... or something like that.
Thing is, is I would expect the stuff to atleast harden and not 
stay putty-like.
