I may have asked this before: The heat from the exhaust pipe
beneath the main body of the vehicle burned off the undercoating
and the surface was beginning to rust. I painted the rust with a
rust converter so that is O.K. now. I plan to undercoat it again
but not until I figure out some way to insulate the exhaust pipe.
I do not have a problem with heat getting into the interior since
I have replaced all the boots on top of the transmission. Any
suggestions?

Herb,
If you pick up just about any Hot Rod mag. or Summit you will
see exhaust wrap for headers. It should work for your pipe too.
It says it reduces temp. so it might work.

DON'T use exhaust wrap unless this is a racing only vehicle
(it doesn't sound like this is the case)
Headers and other exhaust parts need to be able to radiate heat
and be cooled by air circulation. Header wrap keeps those exhaust
parts *HOT*, which induces increased levels of stress... which
leads to cracks/etc/etc.

...which of your two cars is this?
If it's the 124, there should be some shielding material of some
sort already in place... if it's all mounted properly it
shouldn't be all that close to the floor pans either.

actually, it allows the header metal to heat and cool slower,
this reduces the stress level, makes them less brittle so they
dont crack as easy.
