how difficult is it to change?
I am in Michigan w/o a heated garage near the carcass (dead car)
(please say easy!)

Easy!
you have to loosen it to change the timing belt, and vice-versa,
so it's a good idea to do both at the same time

The belt was a givin as mine looks like 6 tiny belts (threads)I
can't believe I made it home..

Even odds say the bearing is what trashed the belt. Do it as a
matter of course. Mine fell to pieces as the tension was removed
and the job is pretty well slip on slip off. Follow the
re-tensioning to the letter to protect your new belt.

From the look sof the old tensioner, it definatly has been frozen
for quite a bit of time, as 3/4 of the outside is corroded, and
the part the belt is on is shiny!! I think the belt heated up
because of the friction created w/o the pully spinning, and dried
up and split.. Vicks shipped it last friday.. what a way to spend
my christmas break..
BTW, I don't know why people can't understand how to drive in
winter. I've been driving the X all the way until it broke
(thurs) 30 miles each way to and from work. all of this in snow
over 28 inches deep.. the plow piles on the side of the road are
taller than the car!! and I have never been stuck!! Close a few
times
