7111 Mon 5th Oct 1998 07:44am Fiat 132 info needed (Csaba Vandor)
I saw a cheap fiat 132, and I was wondering how many parts are
interchangeable with a Spider, or other fiats.
What kind of tranny does a 132 have? Same as a 131?
Anybody know its 5th gear ratio?
Also, this specimen I looked at had some device at the bottom
left side of the engine, that was driven by a toothed belt from
the crank (no, it was not a supercharger, it was on the bottom
of the engine), what is it?? Power steering pump? I could not
open the hood.
Also two 132s I saw had steel 14x5.5 wheels, so thez could be a
good upgrade for a Spider. they were the same stzle as 1979 US
wheels (4 leafclover).
The rear axle is the 131/late Spider style, but it has no
panhard rod, and the mount points are different. The front
suspension is double arm, but the spring is above the upper arm.
So I guess only parts I could use are the engine, wheels, and
maybe the tranny.
Any info appreciated.

mostt of the drive line

yes

no but i think lower than a 124 5 speed But this should not be a
prob

yes power sterring pump

Hey guy unless the engine is putting out over 140 - 150 hp the
std 124 5 speed will be fine, and the diffs are much stronger
than the tranny

The engine will be around 150 hp, it is a hi-po 2 liter.
I also would like a longer 5th gear than the current 0.88.
Something like 0.83, I think that is what 131s had. It is good
to hear that 132s have that same tranny. Thanks for the info!

Csaba --

I slaughtered two 132's for parts for my Spider up to now, a 2.0
carb (400 DM) and a 2.0 FI (free !!!)

You can use the engine, but not straight away:

- the alternator is mounted to the passenger side and has less
power than the Spider one, this might give you some headaches
with the wires and if you have many electrical devices (like e.g.
a stereo with seperate amplifier), I drilled a hole on the driver
side of the block I used for my Spider to mount the alternator
bracket

- in FI models you can find three versions of the ignition
system: either a block mounted transistor/hall device distributor
(like in the Spiders) or a Bosch electronic version (also block
mounted) or a cam driven Magneti Marelli Digiplex. Depending on
which one you find you might either change the wiring harness in
your Spider or prefer to use the Spider ignition

- in '81 or so they changed the oil pan in the 132's, so you must
change the oil pump and pan otherwise you'll have a clearance
problem with the front axle.

- if you want to change to the Spider timing marks (a lot more
accurate than the 132 ones on the plastic cam cover) you must
exchange the crankshaft pulley and lower engine front plate

- you must exchange the oil filter mount with one from a Spider
(bolt off bolt on) because it is different in size (won't fit)
and includes a power steering servo pump

- the exhaust manifold and downpipe cannot be used (I took the
heat shield and the bolts)

The gearbox is different (I have seen three different styles).
The internals for gear 1-4 match up with the Spider but neither
of them is a direct bolt on -- they need body changes (they are
wider and longer than Spider gearboxes), have a different
shifting device (much more in the rear) and, because they are
longer, force you to use a different drivetrain.

The Spider 2.0 gearbox bolts straight onto a 132 2.0 engine, to
use 1400, 1600 (and 1800 ?) gearboxes you must exchange the bell
housing with the one from the 132. The clutch fork then must be
exchanged with one from a Spider (the 132 one does not suit the
Spider setup).

The rear axle is different, but I saved the differentials and
the rear covers who can be used. The rear shocks are the same as
in the Spider.

The steering gearbox and -damper are usable, but the connectors
must be exchanged with Spider parts.

Many small parts and trim items do match like fuel gauge sender,
electrical connectors, plastic clips (might have different
color). Others can be used (like brake booster) not being a
straight bolt on. Others upgrade the Spider a bit like e.g. the
nice rear interior lights which I did install above the map boxes
in my Spider.

ciao,
Stefan
