3989 Wed 15th Dec 1999 01:46pm Wheel nuts needed (CARL FRIEDMAN)
I am converting my sedan to studs for the alloy wheels I just
got (shouldered nuts) and need a set of wheel nuts to attach the
spare tire(stock Fiat steel rim). They look like wheel nuts you
would find on any other car, nothing fancy. Need four for spare
tire but would really like a set of 16 so I can attach all 4
stock wheels if needed.

Carl, I'm pretty sure these were available at my local Pep
Boys. At the time, I was looking for lug bolts, which they didn't
have .... maybe worth checking.

I got a set of four tapered nuts at Pep Boys for my spare tire. I
think they are fine, though haven't had the need to use them yet.

Thanks for the headsup guys. I got so fixated on the 4X98
spacing of the lugs that I forgot the actual thread size is
probably the same as a bazillion metric cars.

The Pacific Rim imports use 12x1.5mm threads while the I-cars use
12x1.25mm

Thanks, I better carefully read the thread size before I buy.

I think it gets more confusing 'cause I believe 850's use 12x1.5
thread too. At least the wheel studs I pulled from an 850 in the
boneyard were 12x1.5 - it could have been a aftermarket mod.

Jim,

The only place that I know sells the studs is Bruce's and the
last time I bought some from him, he kinda grumbled about me
placing an order for $6. Thats why I was taking them off the cars
from the bone yard. How many do you need? If you're just a few
short, I can give you some. I think I have extras. If you need
16, I can't help much!

Of course the other problem is the wheel nuts. If you use the
kind that fit inside the wheel, not the tapered kind like Carl is
looking for, those are also hard to come by. Pep Boys sells a
similar type but they were just a tad too long. I ended up
grinding them a bit so that they fit but its probably not ideal.

Mike, you are correct (kinda). The "early" 850's (up to mid-'68)
used the 12x1.5 ("fine thread", common on 124/X19 cars) lug
bolts on the front wheels & 12x1.25 ("coarse thread") on the rear
wheels. The "late" 850's (mid-'68 to '73) used the "coarse
thread" lug bolts on front & rear.

(I'm getting myself confused... when I say "fine thread", I mean
the threads are very close together (12x1.25=more threads per
inch). "Coarse thread" to me means the threads are spaced apart
more (12x1.5=fewer threads per inch). Is that correct to you?)

I bought a set of wheel studs/nuts/locks for my 850 a few years
ago @ Pep Boys. (I removed them, because the studs with the
keyed, locking-type nut kept breaking/coming loose when I would
try to remove the wheel (for servicing). I also noted they had
BOTH sizes available at the time, with proper "conical seat"
type lug nuts...

Yea, wacking a charge card machine for a total $6 sale can be a
little unprofitable with the per use charge of over $2 plus the
percentage... add a oil filter or two and all is well. The
individual studs are NOT $6... way under that!
I sell the studs (Fiat Spider and Alfa 12 x 1.25, 850 12 x 1.50)
and the acorn nuts in either tapered or sleeved ends( goes into
wheel..comes in different depths). I also have stud based wheel
locks for those with very nice wheels.
Or new original chromed lugs.
Commercial over:)

I've got studs and chrome nuts. Both 12mm x 1.25 or 12mm x 1.5.

It gets weirder--the earlier cars use 1.25 while the later cars
use 1.5.
