I have allready been sent 2 of the all too common 1756 radio
consoles and I want to send them back were they came from! Came
from a Georgia place starts with a "B". Payed a little extra for
the 1438 and got same old shit! Mine's been ripped off so I need
the "guts" with it. Will restore a poor one if it's restorable.

What's the difference between the 1438 and the later ones? I've
had a bunch of these over the years from 69-75 and don't recall
having any problems with fitment on anyone's cars.

the older hazard switch is smaller, so the hole in the console
is smaller. Other than that, they're the same.
(i have an older center console in my car... the newer hazard
switch just doesn't quite fit right- i have to pull it out to
turn on the hazards)

I should have one or two in not-so-great condition. The problem
is that I will not be at my storage until January (have finals
soon, then will be leaving for vacation).
If you have not found one by early January, give me a holler.

While the radio console from the early model spiders "can be
interchanged" there are some differences. 1608's and 1438's had a
emergency flasher switch that flush mounted rather protruted from
the console. The 1608 is otherwise the same. Not so with the 1438
it had/has a unique grill and lay out of the componets (same
componets as the 1608) there is some other minor diferences. It
remains for those who wish to pawn one off as a 1438 to confirm
these minor details!

Couldn't you just use an early faceplate/grille with the later
middle console then?

Is that what you mean? I'm kind of confused. I'm referring to
the 1970-1972 Spiders that I've seen first hand.

I think I may have one, but don't think I want to take the
chance of sending the wrong thing. It must be winter. :\

On the early Spiders the rocker switch is parallel with the
console. On the later ones the plastic holder puts the switch at
an angle to the console so the face of the switch is vertical.
Another difference is that on later models the switch is lighted
(along with the heater controls).

The "hazard" or "flasher" or "emergency lights" switch is a
rocker, but it mounts flush to the face of the console. Just Like
the 1608-its the same switch. Unlike the later model rockers that
"protrude" inorder to be more easily pressed and seen because
they are not pointing down from vertical 20 degrees

Rich responds:
Yes and no- If one starts with a new radio console core-early
model-(a core is a basic part that is then worked up into a
finished part)and you have the switch(no longer availible) and
the light, and the cigarett lighter; then a handy person could
make a reproduction. If the core allready has the cut outs in it
then the reproduction will be more of a challenge and not be
identical.

7196 Fri 8th Dec 2000 07:53am Welcome to the Forum, Richard! (Mark Scholz)
Richard, welcome to the Mirafiori Forum!

For the rest of the readers, Eric Armstrong and I met Richard a
few weeks back while we were chasing parts for the 128 3p.
Richard was sorting out some exhaust clearance issues and parked
on the side of the road. With that fresh red paint on his
spider, it was all Eric and I could do to not take out a few
other cars in our haste to pull over and check out the car and
meet the owner. A very nice daily driver, indeed!

Welcome Richard! Hope those young punks stay away for good.

Richard, I may have the grille and the part surrounding the
grille. Can you send me a photo? Otherwise I will assess the
one I have more closely to see if it fits the descriptions.
If you need the whole vinyl section under the dash, then I do
not have that piece.
